REVEALED: New data puts a price on abuse in UK retail

Figures suggest £235M price tag could be tip of the iceberg…

Verbal and physical abuse against retail workers is costing UK retailers at least £235 Million annually in workforce-related expenses, according to new figures published by body-worn video provider Reveal Media.

The organisation warns that the financial toll could rise to as much as £1 Billion once widespread under-reporting is taken into account, suggesting the headline figure may represent only a fraction of the true cost.

The analysis highlights the tangible business impact of abuse on staff, including sickness absence, employee turnover, lost working hours, injury-related compensation, and diminished team morale. While these consequences are often discussed in human terms, their cumulative financial weight is becoming increasingly difficult for businesses to ignore.

To help retailers better understand this impact, Reveal Media has launched a new Violence & Aggression Cost Calculator tool, which it says can provide an indicative estimate of the annual cost of abuse against staff, tailored to individual stores and incident levels.

Backed by the Retail Trust, the calculator enables organisations to quantify an issue that has historically been under-measured in commercial terms, offering a clearer line of sight between frontline experiences and bottom-line performance.

The findings come against a backdrop of sustained pressure on frontline staff. Recent data from the British Retail Consortium indicates there are more than 1,600 incidents of violence and abuse against retail workers every day in the UK, affecting both in-store employees and delivery personnel.

However, industry observers widely acknowledge that official figures may significantly understate the scale of the problem.

As retailers face tightening margins, labour shortages, and rising customer expectations, the ability to quantify and mitigate frontline risk will become a defining capability in the battle to protect profitability and, more importantly, people.

It the people – our frontline colleagues behind the statistics – who are at the heart of this issue, showing extraordinary bravery in the face of daily abuse. Recognising and celebrating their efforts matters, especially amid the torrent of negative headlines we are seeing in the Press.

This is exactly what the Heroes of Retail Risk Awards (HORRAs) are designed to do. They provide an opportunity to shine a light on those who go above and beyond, whether through acts of courage, compassion, or a commitment to tackling issues like violence and abuse in retail.

You can show your support by joining us on 18th June as we come together to recognise those making a real difference across our industry at the 2026 HORRAs. More information and details of how to reserve your table can be found here.
