Opal issues warning after organised criminals target high-value tech shipments…

More than £680,000 worth of Apple products have been stolen in a series of linked offences believed to be the work of an organised crime group (OCG), according to intelligence shared by Opal.

The UK National Intelligence Unit for Serious and Organised Acquisitive Crime is assisting with investigations spanning the Metropolitan, Warwickshire and Staffordshire police force areas. The thefts have involved high-value shipments of iPhones, iPads and Apple accessories being targeted while in transit.

According to Opal, offenders identify suitable HGVs before travelling alongside them in convoy using so-called “mission vehicles”. Once a target has been selected, the group gains access to the trailer and conducts what investigators describe as an untidy search, identifying items of interest before packing them into hessian sacks.

In some cases, offenders are believed to remain inside the trailer for up to two hours before exiting with the stolen goods.

The total confirmed losses linked to the crime series currently exceed £680,000.

Any organisation that has experienced offences fitting this pattern and is not currently working with Opal is being encouraged to make contact and provide incident details or intelligence to [email protected].

The case highlights the growing threat posed by organised cargo theft, particularly where high-value and highly portable products are concerned. While retail crime has historically focused on offences taking place in stores, criminals are increasingly targeting goods earlier in the supply chain, exploiting vulnerabilities during transportation and distribution. For many retailers, the financial impact extends beyond the value of the stolen stock, affecting availability, fulfilment and customer experience.

The issue of protecting high-value goods in transit, along with practical strategies for reducing supply chain risk, will be among the topics discussed at the upcoming Retail Risk – On the Move conference in Manchester on 17th September 2026.
