Arrests made following series of shoplifting and fuel theft incidents across multiple stores…

An alleged retail theft group accused of targeting stores across New Zealand’s lower North Island has been disrupted following a Police operation in Paraparaumu.

As reported by local media, officers travelling through the area at around 5.15pm on Thursday responded to reports of an active shoplifting incident at a local shopping mall.

According to Sergeant Nathan Hessell, a vehicle had been waiting outside a retail store while three individuals allegedly entered the premises and stole clothing items.

When challenged by staff, the suspects reportedly became aggressive before fleeing the scene in the waiting vehicle with the stolen goods.

Police allege the same group was also connected to the theft of approximately NZ$1,700 worth of meat products from a nearby supermarket around the same time.

Subsequent investigations led officers to identify links between the four people arrested, the vehicle involved, and a wider series of alleged retail offences, including shoplifting incidents and petrol drive-offs affecting a number of businesses over recent months.

The case highlights the growing challenge posed by organised retail crime, with retail offending estimated to cost New Zealand businesses around NZ$2.6 Billion annually, placing increasing financial and operational pressure on retailers nationwide.
