Research reveals strong backing for targeted safeguards that prioritise worker and shopper protection…

A strong majority of Australians support the targeted use of facial recognition technology (FRT) to safeguard retail workers and customers from serious and repeat criminal activity, according to new national polling.

The independent survey, commissioned by the Australian Retail Council and carried out by RedBridge, indicates broad public backing for facial recognition in situations involving significant safety threats.

Findings from the RedBridge Retail Crime Prevention Survey show 81% of respondents favour using FRT to identify individuals who have previously threatened retail staff with a weapon. A similar 80% support its use to flag people who have physically attacked workers or shoppers.

Support remains high for identifying repeat serious offenders more generally, with roughly three-quarters of Australians endorsing its application to those responsible for major theft or persistent disruptive behaviour.

The research also suggests many Australians see practical benefits in the technology. 86% believe facial recognition would assist police in identifying and prosecuting offenders, while 76% say it would help retail employees feel safer on the job.

Commenting on the findings, ARC CEO, Chris Rodwell said: “This research sends a very clear message: Australians want retail workers protected from serious and repeat offenders, and they support the careful use of technology to achieve that.

The public expects high standards and robust privacy safeguards. This is about protecting everyday workers and shoppers from repeat offenders, not tracking law-abiding customers. Retailers accept that responsibility and are seeking nationally consistent frameworks that protect both privacy and the community,” he added.

The question is no longer whether facial recognition has a role in retail safety; it’s how we put clear, consistent rules around its use so workers are protected and our shops are free from violence and repeat theft.
