Newly-crowned Hall of Fame winner Matthew Murray talks policing, retail crime, and life on the Gold Coast…
On this week’s Retail Risk – Podcast, Paul catches up with Matthew Murray, National Retail Security Manager at Allied Security.
Having clocked up an impressive 26 years in the New Zealand Police Force, Matt looks back at his incredible career to date.
From making his first retail crime arrest (an Italian pizza chef who stole a G-string from a department store – yes, really!) to rolling out New Zealand’s national retail crime strategy, you’ll get a fascinating glimpse into a career spent tackling retail crime from every angle.
Paul also gets the inside story on Matt’s transition from policing to his current role at Allied Security – a move he says gave him a real opportunity to bring security into the retail crime discussion and make a difference.
Following his relocation to Australia’s glorious Gold Coast, we hear more about Matt’s plans to strengthen retailer/police collaboration throughout Australia and replicate some of the successful initiatives he oversaw in New Zealand.
Of course, Paul couldn’t let the conversation pass without talking about his guest’s recent win at the New Zealand Fraud Awards, where he was officially inducted into the Retail Risk Hall of Fame.
Matt reflects more on that incredible moment, including his genuine shock and surprise at being recognised in front of so many respected peers… “I think I made a speech, but I couldn’t tell you what I said!” he jokes.
The episode wraps up with a look at what lies ahead for the Murray family for the rest of 2026, including hitting the beach, tackling the hills in their shiny new ute, and basically embracing everything that screams Aussie life!
